This article focuses on counselling issues dealing with African Canadians, including philosophical foundations of “blackness,” identity development, their struggles with racism, and intervention strategies. Cross’ Nigrescence Theory is described and explored as a means of understanding the relationship between personality and racism. We believe that the African Canadian experience provides an opportunity for practitioners to understand the impact of racism on mental health and well-being. Finally, we offer specific counselling strategies for building a positive and helpful relationship with African Canadian clients.
